The Redundant Christian

With the recent news of unemployment rising by 80,000 in 2011 and announcements of more jobs cuts by the military and local government in the offing it felt like the timing of this letter couldn't have been much worse for me and my family. After the initial announcement I trod the well worn path of everyone in my situation, encountering disbelief, worry, loss, fear and anger all wrapped up in a myriad of other emotions. I knew in my heart that this wasn't the right route and I chose to set my feet on a narrower, less well worn path. Starting out, not with a first step, but on my knees and praying. On this road I found more than I had ever hoped for.
Firstly God gave me peace in my heart. For me it was an immediate and effective peace. I was reminded that the Christian can pray to his loving Heavenly Father under any circumstance and expect an answer.
Secondly God gave me comfort through his promises, and in spades. Everwhere I turned, whether it was to my favourite devotions by Spurgeon, our sunday church meeting or prayers and prophecies offered by friends and strangers, they all marched to the same drum, beating out God Is Sovereign. God Is Sovereign. God Is Sovereign. The most powerful of these was from my son who, at breakfast on the final morning of my consultation, sang his favourite chorus "Your love never fails, never gives up, never runs out on me"
Thirdly God gave me courage with his Spirit. I've had to make some tough decisions that will affect my family.  My natural default position is often to avoid difficult decision and keep my head down. With the Spirit I've felt able to make commitments I otherwise would have shied away from.
Only God knows what the future holds for my family.  Truth be told there is nobody I trust more.
